Michael T. McCaffrey is a retired police sergeant and was a driver for Shaw’s Supermarkets for many years. The lack of adequate directions lead to the development of the on-line store directions. The Company did not compensate Michael for his efforts and hundreds of hours creating the store directions. The Company also does not compensate Michael for maintaining the webserver that allows drivers to access the directions on-line.

The Shaw’s store directions service was designed and written entirely by Michael without any assistance from Shaw’s Supermarkets. The original directions took over a year to create as each leg of the routes, for each store, had to be mapped directly on Google Maps to determine the distances and street names. Also, Michael’s vast experience with deliveries to each and every store allowed the supplemental information alerting drivers to known hazards at store locations.

In addition to the textual directions, Michael had to design and code the software that is used to maintain the store directions… converting the directions for on-line browser support for handheld devices. Also, each store image for ingress/egress from the Street to Dock had to be individually created from Google Maps and Microsoft Paint.
